Students and Researchers

Graduate Students

Dr. Downey is currently recruiting graduate students to join the Animal Behavior and Welfare Lab to conduct a research-based MS or PhD beginning Fall 2023. For more information, please contact Blair Downey with your CV or resume, most recent (unofficial) college transcript, and a brief statement highlighting your interest in behavior and welfare, any relevant experience, and your long-term career goals.

Graduate students join the lab through the Animal Science Department. Resources on admission requirements, the application process, and general graduate student expectations can be found there.

Competitive applicants will have a strong background in animal behavior, animal welfare, or animal science (with a focus on dairy cattle). Applicants should have a strong desire to improve the lives of human-managed animals, and an ability to think critically and creatively. Independent research experience is required of PhD applicants and preferred in MS applicants.

Undergraduate Students

We frequently have undergraduate research opportunities available. Most opportunities involve computer-based data collection to analyze animal behavior, but hands-on animal handling is sometimes available as well. There are typically no formal pre-requisites to assisting on research projects, as all training is provided. Opportunities are not paid, but course credit can be arranged. When specific projects are available and recruiting research assistants, they will be posted here.

Nothing posted? Email Dr. Downey with your resume or CV and a brief statement highlighting (1) your interest in behavior and welfare and (2) any relevant experience working with animals, conducting research, or honing skills that are useful in a research setting (e.g. creativity, critical thought, focus, precision). Your information will be kept on file, and we will reach out to you as projects come up to assess fit.

Visiting Scholars

We welcome the opportunity to work with and learn from visiting scholars. International scholars or students seeking internships can be accommodated, though these opportunities are typically not paid. Contact Dr. Downey to arrange an interview and discuss further.

Collaborations

We actively seek collaborations with researchers and industry partners that share a goal of improving animal lives. Please contact Dr. Downey directly to discuss opportunities.
