Animal Welfare Assessments and Audits

Welfare assessments are best when they are supported by scientific findings, measurable, and repeatable. The Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization’s (PAACO) dairy welfare auditor training website provides a deep dive into metrics that are commonly used when evaluating dairy cattle welfare on farm, as well as opportunities to practice and test your skills. This site was co-created by Dr. Downey in collaboration with UC Davis and PAACO.

Professional Organizations

Professional organizations are an invaluable way to connect with other researchers and learn about cutting edge research prior to publication. These organizations typically host annual conferences or symposiums, in addition to free virtual seminars. Some organizations, like the ones below, are especially relevant for researchers interested in behavior, welfare, and/or dairy cattle. Click any photo below to learn more.

International Society for Applied Ethology
American Dairy Science Association
Dairy Cattle Welfare Council
Animal Behavior Society

Data Visualization

Data visualization is a crucial component to effective science communication. There are many sites, books, and individuals that provide resources and examples of dynamic, compelling ways to present data, including Visualizing Data, Questions in Dataviz, and Mona Chalabi.
